The adolescent growth spurt, which is associated with puberty in both sexes, occurs earlier in girls than in boys, by an average of two years (Fig. 14.3). The absence of the two years of decelerating prepubertal growth, and the difference in the peak height velocity at puberty, account for the adult height difference between men and women, which is 12.6cm on average.
